Castleton gets back on track with 20-4 win over Norwich

Fort Ann, NY-Michael Martinez scored five goals and Brett Quillia handed out six assists as Castleton State College cruised to a 20-4 victory over Norwich University in men's lacrosse action at the Golden Goal Tournament Park in Fort Ann, New York.

Castleton controlled play for much of the game en route to a 45-21 advantage in shots, 53-37 advantage in ground balls and 21-7 advantage in face-offs won.

Castleton jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Daniel Luzzi opened the scoring for the Spartans with 10:50 remaining in the first period.  Phil Barry followed with a pair of goals before the 10-minute mark, and Castleton never looked back. Craig Van Yahres pulled the Cadets to within two with  a goal with 7:35 remaining in the period assisted by John Lighthall, but the Spartans scored three unanswered to take a 6-1 lead into the second frame. Martinez picked up his first of the game off a Phil Barry assist, and was followed with goals by Korey Counos and Jake Rick.

Lighthall opened the second period with a goal just 47 seconds in to make it 6-2, but Castleton once again answered with a flurry, scoring four-unanswered for a commanding 10-2 halftime edge.

The second half played out much the same, with the Cadets scoring each period's opening goal and Castleton five unanswered in the third and fourth.

Tyson Chouinard followed Martinez and Quillia in the scoring column with four goals and one assist. Barry added two goals, three assists, while Korey Counos had three goals. Also collecting multiple points on the day for the 4-4 Spartans were Michael DelDotto and Rick with a pair of goals, Jeremy Peyton two goals and one assist and Luzzi with one goal and one assist. Craig Macderment controlled play in the middle, winning 20 out of 25 face-offs and grabbing 10 ground balls. Rick also contributed with 10 ground balls.

Lighthall led the 0-4 Cadets with two goals and one assist, while Kyle Marzeoti had one goal and one assist. Nicholas Bakos played the first half in goal, stopping eight shots before giving way to Nathan Huckins who stopped four second-half shots.

Christopher Wynne made seven saves in the win for Castleton.

Castleton and Norwich both return to conference play on Saturday, with the Spartans hosting Maine Maritime Academy at Golden Goal at 11:00 am, and the Cadets traveling to Babson College for a 1:00 pm face-off.
