Castleton advances to fifth-consecutive NAC final with 17-8 win over Thomas

Castleton, VT-Michael Martinez scored four goals to lead second seed Castleton State College to a 17-8 win over third seed Thomas College in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's lacrosse semifinal action. With the win the Spartans advance to the final game for the fifth-consecutive season.

The Spartans raced out to a 6-0 lead at halftime, out-shooting their guests 30-7 over the first 30 minutes of play. Josh Davis and Martinez each scored twice for Castleton, while Michael DelDotto and Korey Counos each tallied once during the half.

Castleton stretched its lead to 9-0 before Terrier junior, Mike Ross scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 9-2 with 9:05 remaining in the third period. Daniel Luzzi put an end to Ross's run with his 14th goal of the season, assist by Jason Jakimer with 8:10 remaining.

Castleton went on to out-score Thomas 8-6 for the remainder and advance to the championship game.

Kolby Peckham scored three goals to lead the Terriers, who end their season at 7-6 overall. Thomas goalie, Josh Collelo was tested all day and stopped 32 shots.

Jake Rick scored three goals, handed out one assist and corralled 11 ground balls to lead the Spartan transition. Freshman Craig MacDerment was 20-for-26 on face-offs and also grabbed 11 ground balls.

Castleton will travel to Mount Ida College on Saturday, May 3 for the NAC final, time to be determined. The game will mark the fifth consecutive meeting in the conference final for the two teams. Mount Ida has bested Castleton in each of the previous four meetings.
