Men's Soccer Sees Second-Half Push Fall Short Against Eastern Connecticut

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Little East Conference opponent Eastern Connecticut on Homecoming Weekend at Dave Wolk Stadium.

How it Happened:
The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first half, trading scoring opportunities. Xander Berthiaume made a save in goal for the Spartans, while Junior Carreira put a shot on target as Castleton looked to break through.

Eastern Connecticut outshot Castleton 8-3 in the opening half, but the Spartans' defense and Berthiaume kept the Warriors off the scoreboard.

The Warriors earned a pair of corner kicks in the opening three minutes of the second half and converted one to take a 1-0 lead.

Castleton looked to respond shortly after, as Nate Lurie sent a shot just high of the net.

Eastern Connecticut added another goal in the 61st minute to extend its lead.

The Spartans continued to pressure the Warriors' goalkeeper, with Carreira recording two more shots on goal. Jacques Alfani and Charlie Bell also put shots on target, but Castleton was unable to find the back of the net.

Castleton came back to outshoot the Warriors 7-4 in the second half, but Eastern Connecticut held on for the 2-0 win.
 
By the Numbers:
  • Berthiaume recorded seven saves through 90 minutes of play.
  • Carreira led the Spartans with three shots on goal, while Alfani and Bell each added one.
  • Castleton outshot Eastern Connecticut 7-4 in the second half after being outshot 8-3 in the opening half.
