Wrestling Competes at Wildcat Open

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team made the trip to Johnson & Wales on Saturday for the Wildcat Open. The Spartans had 13 place-winners, highlighted by 2 first-place winners, with no team scores recorded at the event.

Aidan Shufelt claimed first place at 133 pounds, after going a perfect 5-0 on the day, taking down teammate Stone Farnsworth in the first-place match to secure his placement. Josh Negron was Castleton's other first-place winner, also going a perfect 5-0 on the day, where he took down 13th-ranked Nick Rogers of Springfield in the championship match at 197 pounds.

Three Spartans claimed second place at the event, with Nathaniel Camiscioli placing second at 157 pounds after a 5-1 day. Farnsworth took second behind Shufelt at 133, and Nicolas Balella was the final second-place finisher at 141 pounds, going 4-1. Viktor Banda was the lone third-place finisher, going 4-1 on the day at 141 pounds.

Dylan Vanegas placed fourth at 149 pounds, facing seventh-ranked Nate Fitt of Coast Guard in one of his two losses on the day, where he finished 3-2. Drew Marchese took fourth at 125, finishing 3-2 as well. Desmond McLaughlin and Joseph Baker also took fourth at 184 and 174 pounds, respectively, both going 3-2. Baker faced eighth-ranked Gage Wiggins of Williams, recording a tight 2-0 loss via decision.

Jack Voute placed fifth at 141 pounds, going 5-1, as did Logan Frank at 285 pounds. Jake Long finished the event going 4-2 at 184 pounds, placing sixth, while Jamel Johnson rounded out the Spartans' place-winners in sixth at 285 pounds, also going 4-2 on the day.
 
The team will head to New England College on Thursday, January 29, for a dual meet, set to begin at 7 p.m.
