Wrestling Competes at Scott Viera Tournament

BRISTOL, R.I. – Part of the Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team appeared at the Scott Viera Tournament in Bristol, Rhode Island, hosted by Roger Williams. The Spartans had one place-winner in Jamel Johnson at 285 pounds. There were no team scores for the event.

Johnson took fourth place at 285 pounds, following a 6-2 outing at the event. He started his day with an 11-4 decision win before narrowly falling via decision in the round of 16. He then went on to win five matches in a row in the consolation bracket, earning a spot in the third-place match. He earned two major decision wins, followed by a decision win, and then he pinned Nick Blitz of Springfield College in 5:23. He took his last consolation match via a medical forfeit, and the third-place match was a no-contest, resulting in Johnson taking fourth.

Reese Greathouse went 3-2 on the day at 149 pounds. He lost via major decision in his first match, and then bounced back with a 17-2 technical fall win, and 1:49 pin, and a 20-13 decision win. In his final match of the day, he fell via decision, 15-11. At 184 pounds, Braeden Gray finished the day 2-2, with a 13-3 major decision win, and a 2:34 pin as his wins. Griffin Norwalt also went 2-2 at the event at 133 pounds, winning his first two matches of the day. He pinned his first opponent in 1:53, and then won 17-9 via major decision before dropping his final two matches of the day. Jack Brown was the final Spartan to go 2-2 on the day at 197 pounds, after winning his first bout via forfeit, and pinning his second opponent in 6:25.

Colin Diffee and Caleb Ives both went 1-2 on the day at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. Diffee's lone win of the day came from a pin in 3:59, and Ives' win was a 16-8 major decision victory.

The team takes a break for the holidays and returns to action on Sunday, January 4, as they meet with Ithaca College.
