CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton athletic department has announced the hiring of Tom Geisler as the new head coach of the Spartan cross country programs. Geisler steps into the role following the departure of former head coach Mike Audette, who led the program since 2021.

"We are excited to welcome Tom as the next head coach of our cross country programs," said Director of Athletics Tim Barrett. "Having worked alongside him for 15 years at Castleton, I can attest to his preparation and unwavering dedication to our students. His passion for cross country and deep understanding of the sport's growth in Vermont and the Northeast will make him an exceptional leader for our programs."

Geisler brings more than a decade of coaching experience from Rutland High School, where he led athletes to State, New England, and National qualifying meets during his two tenures (2000–2005, 2020–2025). He is well-known in the region for his steady approach to athlete development and distance running training.

He has also been part of the Castleton community since 2011 as a Professor in the Department of Health and Exercise Sciences, serving as Department Chair from 2015 to 2023. His combined background in coaching and academia provides a strong foundation as he adds this role to his list of responsibilities.

Geisler holds multiple professional certifications, including USATF Level 1, USTFCCCA Endurance Event Specialist, and VTFOA Official, underscoring his experience and ongoing involvement in the sport.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to lead the Castleton cross-country program," said Geisler. "I enjoy helping runners improve through personalized training and a supportive team culture. Our location offers excellent resources for distance running, and I'm looking forward to working with our student-athletes."

Geisler begins his duties immediately.
