Wrestling Sweeps Alvernia Quad

READING, Pa. – The ninth-ranked Vermont State University Castleton wrestling squad continued to assert its dominance on Saturday, sweeping the Alvernia Quad with a trio of wins—including a 25-14 victory over host and 14th-ranked Alvernia.
 
The Spartans opened the day with a 32-3 drubbing of Delaware Valley before easing to victory over No. 14 Alvernia thanks to four straight wins to open the dual. A pair of pins later in the match sealed the victory with Castleton taking six out of the 10 bouts. In the final match of the day, VTSU Castleton won the first six bouts against Trinity en route to a 47-5 victory.
 
VTSU Castleton has now won four duals in a row and picked up their fifth win against a top-25 program this season in the match against Alvernia. The team sits at 15-3 overall this season in dual matches. Gavin Bradley, James Rodriguez and Jashon Holmes all posted 3-0 records on the day, with Desmond McLaughlin, Sampson Wilkins and Darby McLaughlin each locking up 2-0 marks.
 
No. 9 VTSU Castleton 32, Delaware Valley 3
The dual started with a nail-biting victory for Castleton, with Bradley snagging an overtime victory in the first sudden-victory period thanks to a takedown. The 125-pound bout ended with the ninth-ranked Bradley on top 10-7 to give the Spartans a 3-0 edge. DelVal took the lead away immediately, tying the score with a decision victory at 133 as 13th-ranked Jacob Blair bested Drew Marchese, 5-1. That proved to be the only bout DelVal would win, with the Spartans taking the next eight in a row on the way out.
 
Rodriguez kicked off the winning streak with a win in 2:55 via injury default before Holmes earned an 8-0 major decision at 149. Nathaniel Camiscioli was a 6-0 winner at 157 and Nicholas Roeger racked up a 13-3 win at 165 to run the lead to 20-3. Desmond McLaughlin added an 8-3 win, followed by a 3-0 shutout by Wilkins at 184. Darby McLaughlin was victorious 7-4 at 197. Abbas Abdulrahman, newly into the NWCA's Individual National Rankings at No. 14 among heavyweights, earned a 4-2 win over 11th-ranked Logan Flynn to cap the match with the Spartans on top 32-3.
 
No. 9 VTSU Castleton 25, No. 14 Alvernia 14
Bradley again opened with a victory, claiming a 4-1 decision for a 3-0 Spartan lead. Marchese rebounded with a 16-6 beatdown at 133 before Rodriguez was a winner 4-1 in a nationally-ranked matchup. Rodriguez entered the day ranked No. 8 nationally and his opponent, Avery Leonard, was ranked 14th. Jashon Holmes won a 7-1 decision to give VTSU Castleton a 13-0 lead through four bouts. Alvernia was victorious at 157 and 165 with Camiscioli dropping a 4-1 decision and Roeger falling to the No. 1 wrestler in the nation and last year's NCAA runner-up.
 
Desmond McLaughlin got the Spartans back in the win column with a pin at 174, extending the lead to 19-8 after sticking Jimmy Circle in 4:23. Wilkins was a winner via pin just before the whistle at the end of the first, earning the fall at 2:58 to extend the edge to 25-8 and give the Spartans an insurmountable lead with only two bouts remaining. Alvernia claimed both of those bouts, with No. 11 Isaac Kassis topping Haven Tatarek 4-1 and Mauro Pellot winning 7-4 over Evan Day despite a late comeback attempt from the Spartan rookie.
 
No. 9 VTSU Castleton 47, Trinity (Conn.) 5
Bradley continued his hot streak, notching a pin in just 1:49 for a quick 6-0 Spartan lead. Marchese was an 8-1 winner at 133 to make it 9-0 and Rodriguez powered past his opponent with a first-period pin in 2:48 for a 15-0 lead. At 149, Holmes was a 3-0 winner against the nation's 15th-ranked wrestler in Chris Perry, extending the edge to 18-0.
 
Blake Chapman got in on the action with a pin in 2:05 at 157 pounds for the Spartans, and Roeger followed with a 19-3 tech fall to run the score to 29-0 with four bouts to go. Trinity got its only win of the match at 174 pounds, with Adam Frost winning a 21-4 tech fall against Syrus Colon. The Bantams forfeited the final three bouts of the day, giving Josh Negron, Darby McLaughlin and Shea Garand victories and giving Castleton a 47-5 win.

The Spartans return to action next Friday night at Glenbrook Gym when they host Utica University at 7 p.m.
