CASTLETON, Vt. – The 18th-ranked Castleton University wrestling team picked up two wins on Saturday in a quad match at Glenbrook Gym, topping Delaware Valley and Springfield College.
The Spartans finished the day 2-1 overall, the only loss coming to third-ranked Johnson & Wales University.
CASTLETON 26, DELAWARE VALLEY 12
The match began at 184 pounds, with
Sampson Wilkins netting a 13-3 major decision for a 4-0 lead. DelVal bounced back with a decision at 197 for a 4-3 score before winning at 285 with a major decision for a 7-4 lead.
Kaya Bogle earned a pin at 125 to put Castleton on top 10-7, and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on DelVal cost the Aggies a point to make it 10-6 Castleton in the team scoring. DelVal won another decision at 133, cutting Castleton's lead to 10-9 at the midway mark.
James Rodriguez got Castleton back on the board with a 10-4 win at 141, before
Nicholas Roeger earned a pin in 4:31 at 149, giving Castleton a 19-9 edge.
Jashon Holmes added a major decision for a 23-9 advantage and
Michael Angers topped his opposition at 165 4-1 for a 26-9 edge. DelVal claimed the 174-pound bout but it made no difference in the result as Castleton won 26-12.
CASTLETON 27, SPRINGFIELD 14
Beginning at 125 pounds, Springfield jumped out to a 6-0 lead after wins by Joey and Gianni Manginelli—both nationally ranked in their class—at 125 and 133. Rodriguez got Castleton on the board with a 6-3 decision before Roeger tied the match at 6-6 with an 8-3 decision of his own. Springfield led 11-6 at the midway point after a technical fall win at 157.
Angers worked Castleton back into it with a 6-4 decision to make it 11-9 before Fleming's pin at 174 put the Spartans ahead 15-11. A forfeit win for
Sampson Wilkins at 184 pushed the lead to 21-11, and
Josh Negron followed up with a pin to put the match out of reach at 197, 27-11. Springfield took the heavyweight bout 7-2, making the final score 27-14 in favor of Castleton.
JWU 27, CASTLETON 15
JWU opened with a pin at 125 by national No. 1 Joziah Fry before
Michael Gonyea leveled the score at 6-6 with a pin of his own in 2:01. Two more pins by JWU put the Wildcats ahead 18-6 before Holmes picked up a decision win at 157 to make it 18-9 at the halfway point.
Desmond McLaughlin dropped an intense battle at 165 by a 9-8 score, nearly scoring a takedown at the horn but coming up just shy of the points. JWU took 174 in a tight decision as well to run its lead to 24-9, but Wilkins netted a 6-0 decision at 184 to make it 24-12 and keep Castleton alive. A 3-0 decision at 197 sealed the match for JWU, but
Shea Garand earned a 2-0 win at 285 to make it 27-15 in the final score column.
Castleton hosts Williams College next Friday at 7 p.m. in the final dual of the regular season at Glenbrook Gym. The Spartans will honor their seniors prior to the match.
