SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Castleton University wrestling team finished second at the NEWA Futures Tournament on Sunday, notching 13 place finisher and four individual champions at the event.
Castleton's 145 points were second only to Johnson & Wales, which finished first with 185.5 points. Springfield was the only other team to eclipse the 100-point mark as a team, finishing third at 101.5 points.
Castleton's four winners were
Kaya Bogle at 125,
Daniel Kirsch at 133,
Elijah Cyr at 149 and
Josh Negron at 184.
Darius Mangiafico (157),
Desmond McLaughlin (174) and
Abbas Abdulrahman (285) finished second in their weight class and
Caleb Massari (133) finished third.
Ayden Robles (133) and
Taylor Stearns (157) were fourth-place finishers with
Cruz Henton (197) fifth.
Caleb Rojas (174) and
Colton Perkins (285) rounded out the place finishers in sixth place.
Bogle posted a 4-0 mark on the day with a pair of tech falls, while Kirsch went 5-0 with three wins via decision. Cyr was 5-0 as well, winning twice via fall and once via tech fall at 149. Negron rounded out the first-place finishers with a 4-0 day with two decisions, a major decision and a pin.
Mangiafico, McLaughlin and Abdulrahman each made it to the title bout in their weight class, but each fell just shy of standing atop the podium. Mangiafico won a major decision and two decisions to get into the finals, while McLaughlin was victorious with one major and three decisions before both dropped a decision in the title bout. Abdulrahman won twice via fall and once via decision to get into the finals, but dropped a heartbreaker in the championship. He notched a late takedown to go ahead 3-1, but Adolfo Betancur earned two points for a reversal to tie the match at 3-3 before pinning Abdulrahman with just a second left in regulation.
Massari's third-place result came in a head-to-head battle with teammate Robles, as both made the semifinals before being bounced to the third-place match. The battle went to overtime, with Massari prevailing in a 6-4 sudden-decision victory. Stearns made it to the third-place match as well, but forfeited the bout to finish fourth.
Henton won the fifth-place bout at 197, winning four times in a row after dropping his first bout of the day. Three of those wins came via fall, including the fifth-place match that ended in one minute flat.
Rojas and Perkins each made the fifth-place match in their bracket, but both dropped tight matches on their way to sixth-place finishes. Rojas fell 6-4 in overtime, while Perkins forced overtime as well but was pinned in the extra period.
The Spartans were the defending champions, claiming first place in 2022 at the event. Bogle and Cyr repeated as champions in 2023 after claiming first place in their brackets in 2022 as well.
Castleton wrestles next on Saturday and Sunday in Gorham, Maine, at the NCAA Regionals hosted by Southern Maine.
