CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University wrestling program honored its five graduating wrestlers on Friday night, posting a 33-9 win over Williams College in the final home match of the season.

Seniors Cooper Fleming, Michael Gonyea, Shea Garand, Nicholas Roeger and Michael Angers were recognized prior to the match along with student manager Brianna Murray. Fleming hit a milestone mark in his final match in front of the home crowd, picking up his 100th career victory for the Spartans. He becomes just the fifth wrestler to win 100 matches with Castleton wrestling.

Beginning at 197 pounds, Castleton got out to an early lead thanks to a 3-1 decision win by Josh Negron. Negron led 1-0 after two periods, and a third-period takedown sealed the victory for the first-year Spartan. After a pin for Williams at 285, Castleton bounced back with a decision victory by Gavin Bradley at 125 to tie the score at 6-6. Bradley came from behind in the match, using a litany of near-fall points to complete the victory over David Yeh.

Gonyea tacked on a second straight win for Castleton, pinning Lucas Johnson in just 1:26 to put Castleton ahead 12-6. James Rodriguez kept the party rolling with a dominant showing at 141 pounds, winning an 18-6 major decision over Donnie Morton. Roeger continued the victory streak for Castleton at 149, topping Caleb Seyfried 10-4 for a 19-6 lead in the dual scoring.

Williams' Peter Kane, ranked 12th nationally at 157, put the Ephs back in the win column with a 7-1 decision win, but Castleton bounced back at 165 as Angers put the heat on Eamon Garrity-Rokous with a 16-5 major decision to cement the Spartan lead at 23-9. Fleming was next at 174, and he brought the crowd to its feet with his 100th victory—an 11-1 major decision that nearly resulted in a pin for the fifth-year senior. A forfeit at 184 pounds for Williams gave the Spartans a 33-9 victory in the final scoring.

The Spartans are off until next Sunday, February 18, when they compete at the NEWA Futures Tournament at Western New England University in Springfield, Mass.
