PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Castleton University wrestling program's future is bright, as the Spartans claimed the 2022 NEWA Futures title in convincing fashion with five individual champions and 11 top-four place finishers on Sunday.
The Spartans finished with 210 points as a team, nearly 35 points ahead of second-place Johnson & Wales (186.5). Springfield was third at 87 team points.
Kaya Bogle,
Elijah Cyr,
Syrus Colon,
Alec Richards and
Haven Tatarek all claimed titles in their respective weight classes, propelling Castleton to the top spot as a team.
Bogle went 4-0 at 125 pounds on his way to victory, all four wins coming via fall. The fastest of the four came in 1:44 seconds, a feat he accomplished twice on the day en route to victory.
Evan Kinney also placed at 125 pounds, finishing third with a 4-1 mark—his only loss coming to Bogle in the semifinals. Kinney had an impressive day, logging a win in each category: decision, major decision, technical fall and fall.
Mason Lishness finished fourth at 133 pounds with a 4-2 record. He won his first match with a 15-0 tech fall, but got bounced to the consolation side where he rattled off three straight wins to earn a spot in the third-place match before coming up on the wrong side of a 5-2 decision.
Cyr was the victor at 141 pounds with a perfect 5-0 record on the day, all five of them coming via major decision or better for scoring purposes. He opened the day with a tech fall victory before logging back-to-back pins, the latter of which was in just 23 seconds. He earned a trip to the finals with an 11-2 win via major decision before besting teammate
Tylik Epps in the title bout, 9-1. Epps finished 3-1 on the day, all three of his wins coming via pin.
Nikko Walsh earned a fourth-place finish at 149 pounds, logging two pins to start the day before getting pinned himself in the semifinals. He went on to add two more pins to his resume before landing in the third-place match with a 16-0 technical fall. The third-place match was awarded to Walsh's opposition as a no contest due to the total number of matches wrestled. Walsh finished the day 5-1 overall.
Colon posted a 4-0 mark on the afternoon at 174 pounds, opening with a major decision before pinning his opponent to get into the semifinals. He then earned a spot in the title bout with a 9-4 decision, before besting teammate teammate
Jakai Townsend with a 5-3 decision. Townsend finished the day 3-1 overall, his only loss coming in the 174-pound finals to Colon.
Richards was victorious at 184 pounds, working his way through the bracket unbeaten at 4-0 with a trio of pins. His fastest came in his first bout in just 2:15, before pinning opponents in 3:33 and 3:44 to earn a spot in the finals, where he won an 11-6 decision for the 184-pound crown.
Tatarek rounded out Castleton's first-place finishers with a title at 197 pounds, going 4-0 with two pins and two decisions. He opened with pins in 4:00 and 4:51 before winning consecutive 5-1 decisions for the No. 1 spot in his weight class.
Abbas Abdulrahman was the Spartans' final place-finisher at 285 pounds, finishing second with a 4-1 mark on the day. Abdulrahman had two falls and a decision win before landing in the finals following a medical forfeit by his semifinal opponent. His last match of the day went into overtime, but a takedown by Norwich's Mason Sprinkel handed Abdulrahman a tough-luck loss, 9-7, in the first sudden-victory period.
Castleton returns to action for the NCAA Regional Championships on Saturday, February 26, and Sunday, February 27, in Springfield, Mass.
