Wrestling Claims Top Spot at Wildcat Invitational

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Castleton University wrestling team put on a dominant showing at the Penn College Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, claiming first place as a team in its first appearance in the event.
 
The Spartans racked up 223.5 points as a team, winning six weight classes and having one second-place, three third-place and two fourth-place finishers. Wilkes was second with 169.5 points as a team, winning two of the weight classes with four runners up.
 
The Spartan winners came at 125, 133, 141, 157, 165 and 197, as Kaya Bogle, Michael Gonyea, James Rodriguez, Logan Dubuque, Michael Angers and Chance LaPier won their respective weight classes. It was the second weekend in a row that Bogle and Angers won at 125 and 165, respectively. Sampson Wilkins placed second at 184, with Nicholas Roeger, Cooper Fleming and Shea Garand registering third-place finishes at 149, 174 and 285. Elijah Cyr at 149 and Alec Richards at 184 finished fourth.
 
Bogle bookended his first-place finish with pins on the day, opening his bracket with a pin in 1:24 before winning the title bout in 3:47. In the quarterfinals he won a 6-4 decision before shutting out his opponent with a 9-0 major decision in the semifinals. Gonyea was equally as dominant, going 4-0 with bookend pins as well. He opened the day with a win via fall in 1:31 before notching a 17-2 victory via technical fall in the quarterfinals. He moved to the title bout with a 14-7 win by decision before claiming the 133-pound title with a fall in just 37 seconds.
 
Rodriguez went 5-0 on the day at 141 pounds, pinning each of his first three opponents in 6:32, :41, and 3:56, respectively. He won an 8-3 decision in the semifinals before claiming the 141-pound title with a 5-3 decision. At 157 pounds, Dubuque tallied back-to-back technical fall victories, winning 18-1 and 16-0 to start the day. He then won 4-2 in the semifinals before pinning his opponent with less than a minute remaining to win the 157-pound crown.
 
Angers collected his second 165-pound title of the season with consecutive pins to open the day, winning in 3:42 and 6:13 before claiming a pair of decisions in the semifinals and the championship, 3-1 and 4-2. LaPier earned the top 197-pound position with a 5-0 mark with four of the wins coming by fall. He won in 6:40 in the opener, 4:28 in the second round, :25 in the quarterfinals, and 2:32 in the championship bout. His semifinal victory was a 2-1 win by decision.
 
Wilkins went 4-1 overall on Saturday at 184 pounds, winning 5-1 to start the day before pinning his opponent in 5:00 flat in round two. A 2-0 win in the quarterfinals and a 6-3 win in the semifinals put him through to the 184-pound championship match, but he came up on the wrong side of a 15-2 major decision, finishing No. 2 on the day.
 
Roeger locked in the most wins of all Spartans, going 6-1 on the day and working through a multitude of rounds in the consolation bracket. He won his first two matches of the day, one of which came via pin, but dropped his third-round match to move to the consolation bracket. He rattled off four wins in a row from there, notching back-to-back major decisions before winning twice by decision to claim third place at 149 pounds. He bested his teammate Cyr for the third-place spot, placing Cyr fourth with a 4-2 mark on the day.
 
Fleming posted a third-place finish at 174 pounds, going 4-1 overall. He won via major decision in each of his first two bouts, but dropped a decision in the semifinals, 11-4. In the consolation bracket, he won 7-6 to move on to the third-place match and claimed the No. 3 spot with an 8-2 win. Garand also placed third at the heavyweight division, going 4-1 with a pair of wins via pin on the day. He opened the day with a fall at 3:34, but dropped his second-round matchup 16-0 to move to the consolation bracket. He answered with a pin in just 35 seconds, and was winning his third-place match 17-10 when the match concluded via injury default.
 
Richards wrapped up Castleton's top-4 finishers with a fourth-place position at 184 pounds. He won handily in his first two bouts of the day, pinning his opponent in 3:29 before claiming a 20-5 win via technical fall. He then dropped a 13-7 decision, but won three straight matches to earn a spot in the third-place bout. The final match was deemed a no contest, with both wrestlers placing in a tie for fourth.
 
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday, December 4, at the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by the University of Southern Maine at 10 a.m.
