BRISTOL, R.I. – The Castleton University wrestling team rode a pair of champions, two runners-up and a third-place finisher to a second-place result as a team on Saturday at the Roger Williams Invitational.
The 19th-ranked Spartans logged 159.5 points as a team, finishing second only to No. 8 Johnson & Wales.
Kaya Bogle and
Michael Angers were the 125 and 165-pound champions, respectively, while
James Rodriguez and
Chance LaPier finished as runners-up at 141 pounds and 197 pounds.
Elijah Cyr was victorious in the third-place match at 149 pounds for the Spartans.
Castleton also had a trio of fourth-place finishers in
Michael Gonyea (133),
Alec Richards (184) and
Haven Tatarek (197), while
Sampson Wilkins (184) and
Shea Garand (285) finished fifth in their weight classes.
Cooper Fleming (174) and
Abbas Abdulrahman (285) rounded out Castleton's place finishers with sixth-place results.
Bogle and Angers both went unbeaten at 4-0 on the day, with Bogle picking up the 125-pound title through two wins via decision and two wins via major decision. After advancing to the championship bout with a narrow 3-2 win over Wesleyan's Greg Fischer, Bogle cruised past Bridgewater State's Wilson Gomes in the championship match with a 17-8 major decision. At 165, Angers began the day with a 9-0 major decision before rattling off three straight wins via decision to claim the crown. His semifinal bout was his tightest match of the day, as he came out on top of a 5-4 decision with a late escape. He won 5-2 in the championship match, getting a reversal in the third period in addition to the bonus point for riding time.
Rodriguez again battled against some of the best in the nation at 141 pounds, taking second place after falling in the title bout to the fourth-ranked wrestler in the country at 141, Hayden Brown. Rodriguez started the day 3-0, winning twice via major decision and once via decision. His 12-3 victory in the semifinals set him up for a chance to win the 141-pound title. Rodriguez was level with Brown at 3-3, but Brown held the edge in riding time and used the bonus point to claim the victory and the crown. At 197, LaPier began the day 3-0 with a win by decision followed by back-to-back major decisions. He fell in a tight battle to Coast Guard's Coy Spooner, 8-6.
Cyr rounded out Castleton's one-loss wrestlers Saturday, going 4-1 en route to a third-place finish at 149 pounds. He began the day with two wins, claiming a pair of decisions before being sent to the consolation bracket with a 10-4 loss via decision. He won in the consolation semifinals, 6-5, using a late takedown to seal the victory and advance to the third-place bout. In the final match of the day, Cyr again won a nail-biter, winning 3-2 after a third-period escape put him up by a point.
Tatarek went 5-2 on the day, while Wilkins and Garand were each 4-2 overall. Gonyea and Richards each finished the day 3-2, while Fleming went 4-3 and Abdulrahman 3-3.
Castleton returns to the mat Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Battle for the Green Mountain Championship against Norwich University in Glenbrook Gym. Exhibition matches are slated to start at 6 p.m.
