Men's Tennis Sweeps Past Northern Vermont-Johnson

RUTLAND, Vt. -- Earning its first win of the 2020 season, the Castleton University men's tennis team defeated Northern Vermont-Johnson 9-0 Saturday afternoon at the Grand Slam Tennis Courts.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 1-1 while the Badgers lose its season opener and fall to 0-1.

The Spartans jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as all three doubles teams came out victorious. Jared Wheeler and Levi Williams led the way as the first doubles team quickly jumped out to a 5-2 lead en route to an 8-3 win. Rowan Kidder and Jacob Peet took home an 8-6 win at second doubles while Phil Kluge and Luke Cohen swept to an 8-0 win at the third flight.

The team swept through singles action as four Spartans earned straight-set wins. Wheeler took care of business as he defeated Dylan Griffin 6-0, 6-0 at first singles while Williams also earned a straight-set win at second singles. Spencer Butter, competing at third singles, dropped the second set but came out with a 7-6, 5-7, 10-8 victory over Patrick Bell. 

Kidder defeated Kyle Robbins 6-3, 6-2 at fourth singles while Peet and Kluge both earned straight-set wins at fifth and sixth singles.

Castleton returns to action Wednesday, March 11 as it takes on MCLA at the Grand Slam Tennis Courts in Rutland, Vt., with a scheduled start time of 4 p.m.
