Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. – Nathan Hinson's near perfect singles performance propelled the Castleton University men's tennis team to its second 9-0 sweep in as many days as it took down conference opponent Johnson State on Sunday afternoon at the Grand Slam Tennis Center.
Castleton improves to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the North Atlantic Conference, while Johnson State is now 1-5 and 0-2 in league play.
After claiming a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win on Saturday afternoon, Hinson surrendered only one game on Sunday. The sophomore is now 3-1 overall in 2018 and 2-1 in conference action after earning the 6-0, 6-1 victory at fifth singles.
Starting off hot for the second consecutive day, Castleton swept the doubles portion of the match, claiming a 3-0 advantage. Quentin Barthe and Jared Wheeler again held court comfortably in the top flight with an 8-3 win.
The duo of Trevor Hanna and Brody Wagner made a return at second doubles and they continued right where they left off. Rolling to an 8-0 shutout, the team is now 5-0 during 2018.
In singles play, Hanna and Wagner played the third and fourth flights, respectively and each earned victories with ease. Hanna moves to 4-1, while Wagner improves to 5-0.
Considering the match had already been decided, Wheeler and Riley Laughlin played pro sets. In the first to 10, win by two format, Wheeler earned the 10-3 victory in the second flight, while Laughlin claimed a 10-0 win at sixth singles.
Castleton returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday for a conference match at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
