Box Score STOWE, Vt. – Picking up seven shutout sets, the Castleton University men's tennis team defeated the host Johnson State College Badgers 9-0 in a nonconference match on Saturday afternoon at TopNotch Resort.
Castleton improves to 2-0 during the young season, while Johnson State begins at 0-1.
Quickly collecting a pair of points at first and second doubles, the duos of Quentin Barthe and Jared Wheeler, as well as Trevor Hanna and Brody Wagner, were too much to handle. Collecting 8-1 and 8-0 victories, respectively, Castleton surged out to a 2-0 advantage and did not look back.
Following Darwin Norris and Ethan Cameron-Vaupel's 8-4 third doubles victory, Wheeler, Wagner, Hanna and Norris dominated in singles. At third and fifth singles, Hanna and Norris collected double-bagel 6-0, 6-0 results, in order.
Wheeler surrendered a single game, while Wagner dropped only two. During the sixth singles contest, Cameron-Vaupel had to grind after falling in the opening set. After losing a 6-3 opener, he bounced back 6-2 and in the decider earned a 10-7 result in the super-tiebreak.
Men's tennis returns to the courts in a week for its home opener at Grand Slam Tennis Arena in Rutland, Vt. They will face the University of Maine-Fort Kent at 1 p.m.
