Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Castleton softball team saw its season come to a close on Saturday as it fell 10-2 in six innings to Cortland in an NCAA Championship Tournament Regional elimination game at Dragon Field.
The Spartans finished their season with a record of 21-13, including its first-ever North Atlantic Conference Championship and first-ever NCAA Tournament win. Cortland moves to 37-10 overall and advances to tomorrow's Regional Championship against Rowan.
Chelsea Grady was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss, while Timi Carone chipped in with a 1-for-3 game and an RBI of her own. Kayla Wood took the loss for Castleton, working five innings and allowing nine runs, six earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts. Taylor Paquette went one inning and allowed on run on two hits. Senior Brittany Brayman was selected to the All-Tournament Team for her play in the three NCAA Tournament games.
For Cortland, Diane Cork was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Erin Wolstenholme also recorded a home run to go along with a pair of RBIs. Sam Van Dorn picked up the win for Cortland, working four scoreless innings in relief.
The Spartans struck first once again, as they pushed a run across in the home half of the first after a scoreless top half. Back-to-back hits by Jessica Babcock and Brayman gave Castleton runners at second and third, before an RBI groundout by Grady made it a 1-0 game. Krista Carcaterra then turned on a ball down the third-base line, but a nice grab by Kaleigh Churchill ended the threat with just one run.
Cortland answered back in the top half of the second, as a two-out single by Rosie Phillips scored Andrea Schoonmaker to draw the game even at 1-1.
The Spartans were back at it in the second inning, when Tori Swaine led off with a walk before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kristi Lawless. A single by Ruby Bushey gave Castleton runners at the corners. Carone then drove in Swaine with an infield single to give Castleton the lead once more at 2-1.
Cortland didn't back down, as it took its first lead of the game in the third inning. Cork singled to lead off the inning, before Wolstenholme sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left center to make it 3-2 in favor of the Red Dragons.
Cortland's offense continued its hot streak in the fourth inning, as Cork deposited a two-out pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer to make it 5-2 in favor of the Red Dragons.
After a scoreless fifth inning for both teams, Cortland put up five more runs in the top of the sixth to extend its lead. A leadoff double and an error gave Cortland runners at the corners, before a stolen base put a pair of runners in scoring position. A fielder's choice and a base hit up the middle scored a trio of runs for the Red Dragons, and a sacrifice fly pushed across the fourth run of the inning to make it 9-2. A two-out double down the right field line by Mikayla Shade capped off the scoring, making it a 10-2 game in favor Cortland. The Spartans were retired in order in the bottom half of the sixth to end the game via the eight-run rule.
