Castleton Edged by Rhode Island College Despite Gould’s Dominant Outing

CASTLETON, Vt. – Despite a dominant performance in the circle from Madison Gould, the Vermont State University Castleton softball team fell to Rhode Island College, 4-3, in Little East Conference Tournament action. The loss moves the Spartans into an elimination game tomorrow against UMass Dartmouth.

How it Happened:
The Spartans came out strong in the first inning, with a single from Maddy Dudley and an RBI single from Samera Rideout. Alex Brouilette then launched a two-run home run to left field, giving Castleton an early 3-0 advantage.

Rhode Island College got on the board in the third inning, using a double off the fence to set up their first run of the game before a Spartan throwing error allowed that runner to score, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Anchorwomen broke through in the fifth inning, stringing together five hits to plate three runs and take their first lead of the afternoon at 4-3.

Castleton rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning with a leadoff single and a pair of well-placed bunts down the third-base line. They put pressure on the Rhode Island College defense and brought the tying run into scoring position. However, a fielder's choice off the bat of Gould resulted in a game-ending double play.

Top Performers:
  • Gould delivered a dominant complete-game performance in the circle, allowing no walks while striking out 11 batters.
  • At the plate, Brouillette provided an early spark for the Spartans with a two-run home run in the first inning to give Castleton the early advantage.
