Castleton Beats MCLA 9-0 in Regular Season Finale

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Castleton closed out the regular season this afternoon with an impressive 9-0 victory in North Atlantic Conference action over the MCLA Trailblazers. 

The Spartans delivered a dominating performance, giving up just five points in doubles play while recording five straight-sets singles wins. With the victory, Castleton finishes the regular season with a 10-3 (4-2 NAC) record, marking the first time since 2013 that the Spartans have reached the double-digit win plateau. MCLA, meanwhile, drops to 3-6 on the year and 3-3 in the conference.

The tandem of Seth Marcil and Ryan Mulder made sure that the Spartans got off to a quick start, capturing an 8-3 victory in the top-flight to give the squad an early lead. Soren Pelz-Walsh and Quentin Barthe notched their team-leading 12th doubles win of the season in the No. 2 slot, while Tyler Wilcox and Andrew Overton took the third-flight match, 8-2. 

Castleton maintained the momentum in the singles games, as Marcil and Pelz-Walsh opened play with a pair of straight-sets victories in the No. 1 and 2 slots. Barthe picked up his fifth straight singles win of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the third-flight, while Overton and Mulder recorded perfect 6-0, 6-0 victories in the No. 4 and 5 slots. Wilcox closed out the match with a come-from-behind, 1-6, 6-1, 10-5 victory in the sixth-flight to bring the game to its final score of 9-0.

The Spartans will be the host institution for the NAC Tournament, which is scheduled to take place on April 30. Pairings for the tournament will be released at a later date.
