NEW LONDON, N.H. – Castleton had its three-game winning streak snapped this afternoon with an 8-1 defeat at the hands of the Colby-Sawyer Chargers in North Atlantic Conference play at the Kelsey Courts.
The Spartans struggled this afternoon, as they suffered just their third loss of the season and second in conference play to fall to 9-3 overall (3-2 NAC). The Chargers (9-5) swept the doubles games and captured four of the six singles games in straight sets to push its winning streak to four and stay undefeated in the NAC at 4-0.
Castleton struggled early on, dropping all three doubles matches to go behind 3-0. Quentin Barthe and Soren Pelz-Walsh suffered their first loss of the season in doubles play, falling 8-4 in the top-flight. Seth Marcil and Ryan Mulder lost 8-4 in the No. 2 slot, while Andrew Overton and Tyler Wilcox came up just short in the third-flight, 8-5.
Colby-Sawyer maintained the momentum in singles play, taking the first and second-flight matches by scores of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-1. Barthe picked up the lone Spartan point of the afternoon with his ninth singles victory of the year, taking the No. 3 match 0-6, 7-6, 10-5 victory. Overton, meanwhile, battled back from an early deficit to force three sets, but fell in the fourth-flight, 7-5, 6-3, 10-0.
The Spartans close out their regular season tomorrow at 1 pm when they square off with the MCLA Trailblazers in conference play at the Zavattaro Complex in North Adams, Mass.
