RUTLAND, Vt. – Castleton continued its perfect start and swept its third match of the season, beating Lyndon 9-0 on Saturday afternoon at Grand Slam Tennis in Rutland.
The Spartans earned their first conference victory of the season and improved to 6-0 overall, their best start since 2009. The Hornets, meanwhile, dropped to 1-2 and 0-1 in conference action.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Seth Marcil and Kevin Rosset took down Jake Lacerda and Trevor Updike 8-3, while the No. 2 doubles duo of Quentin Barthe and Soren Pelz-Walsh also won by an 8-3 margin. Tyler Wilcox and Andrew Overton made it a sweep of doubles with an 8-0 shutout at the third spot.
Marcil impressed in the No. 1 singles spot with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set victory while Rossett took No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-3. Each of the four remaining singles matches were won in straight sets, with Pelz-Walsh winning at the No. 3, Barthe at No. 4, Overton at No. 5 and Wilcox at No. 6.
Castleton looks to keep its record unblemished when the Spartans travel to face Thomas next weekend in a rematch of last year's conference semifinals.
