LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Castleton men's tennis captured its third straight win of the week with a 9-0 victory over the Lyndon Hornets in non-conference play this afternoon at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center.
The Spartans turned in a dominating performance, sweeping the doubles games and capturing five of the six singles games in straight-sets. Castleton now stands at 9-2 overall, while the Hornets fall to 1-8 on the season.
Soren Pelz-Walsh and Quentin Barthe made their first appearance in the No. 1 doubles spot for Castleton, capturing an 8-2 victory to remain perfect on the year at 11-0. The tandem of Tyler Wilcox and Andrew Overton took the third-flight match 8-4, while Lyndon had to forfeit the other doubles game to give the visitors an early 3-0 lead.
The Spartans maintained the momentum in singles action, as Seth Marcil opened play with a 6-3, 6-0 win in the top-flight match. Barthe took the No. 3 singles game by a score of 6-1, 6-0, followed by straight-sets wins in the No. 4-6 spots by Overton (6-1, 7-6), Ryan Mulder (6-0, 6-0) and Wilcox (6-1, 6-0). Similar to the second-flight doubles match, the Hornets had to forfeit the No. 2 singles game due to injury.
Castleton faces, arguably, its toughest test of the season next Saturday when the squad travels to New London, N.H. to face off with the reigning NAC Champions Colby-Sawyer at 1 pm.
