RUTLAND, Vt. – Castleton men's tennis maintained its perfect start to the 2016 season with a 7-2 victory over the Green Mountain College Eagles in non-conference play this afternoon.
The Spartans dropped both top-flight games, but swept the remainder of the matches to pick up their second straight victory and move to 2-0 overall. The Eagles, meanwhile, drop to 0-1 on the season.
In doubles play, the duo of Seth Marcil and Kevin Rosset fell to Connor Braden and Truman Campbell in the top-flight match, 8-3. However, the other two doubles tandems took care of business with decisive 8-1 and 8-3 victories in the No. 2 and 3 slots to put Castleton in front early on, 2-1.
The Spartans carried that impressive play into the singles games, recording five straight sets victories. Rosset took the No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-2, followed by an impressive 6-0, 6-1 victory in the third-flight match by Soren Pelz-Walsh. Andrew Overton picked up his second singles victory of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 3 slot, while Ryan Mulder and Tyler Wilcox capped off the day with a pair of straight-sets victories in the fifth and sixth-flight matches.
Castleton returns to action next on Sunday, March 20 when the squad travels to Johnson, Vt. to square off with the Johnson St. Badgers in non-conference action at 1 pm.
