Box Score New London, N.H. - Emily Lowell recorded two goals and an assist in a back-and-forth affair that featured three separate ties throughout the contest, but the Castleton field hockey team was unable to capitalize late, dropping a 5-3 decision at Colby-Sawyer on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Castleton falls to 6-10 on the season and 2-2 in the North Atlantic Conference East, while Colby-Sawyer improves to 10-4, 3-1.
Colby-Sawyer jumped on the board early with a goal by Sierra Shuster just 4:59 into the contest, but the Spartans quickly responded with a goal from Lowell on the ensuing possession just sixteen seconds later. Lowell's team-leading 11th goal of the season came from Haley Spittle, who notched her seventh assist on the campaign and tied the game 1-1.
The Chargers regained the lead when Alie Jones picked up her 14th goal of the season on an assist from Allyson Mullen at the 11:17 mark of the first half. Spittle was back in action less than ten minutes later, receiving a feed from Lowell and finding the back of the cage to knot the score at 2-2 at 21:11 of the half. Both goalkeepers were active over the final 14 minutes of the stanza, keeping the score deadlocked at 2-2 going into the break.
The Spartans took their first lead of the contest less than two minutes into the second half when Lowell picked up her second goal of the game in the 36th minute, giving the Spartans a short-lived 3-2 edge.
Colby-Sawyer quickly responded with a goal from Jenna Donahue in the 40th minute to once again tie the match at 3-3. Despite the Spartans outshooting the Chargers 6-3 in the second half, Colby-Sawyer went on to tally two more goals over the final 30 minutes to take the 5-3 win.
Lowell led the Spartans with five points on the afternoon, including two goals and an assist. Spittle followed with a goal and an assist, while Sarah Wells, Cassidy Auger, and Rachel Holland also added shots on goal in the contest.
Meeghan Doris recorded four saves in the cage for the Spartans, despite falling to 3-6 on the season following the loss.
The Spartans will return to action at Fitchburg State on Thursday for a non-conference tilt starting at 6 p.m.
