CASTLETON, VT- The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team hosted Vassar in its home opener on Friday afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium. The Brewers won by the score of 5-0.

How It Happened
The Brewers had a shot 1:10 into the first quarter that glanced off the post. The Spartans registered their first shot of the contest at 2:19. Vassar scored off a penalty corner by Sydney Yu with 41 seconds remaining in the quarter to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Spartan goalie Izabella Cosden (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area HS) made a pair of saves early on. The Spartan defense warded off three straight Brewers' penalty corners and Yu would hit the post at 19:57. Castleton moved into the offensive zone in the 26th and 28th minute as Brooke Noble (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson Secondary) had a pair of penalty corners but the Spartans could not capitalize on the opportunities. Ava LaRoss (Westminster, Vt/Bellows Falls Union) had a penalty corner at 27:13 and Jaedyn Roberson (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls Central) had a shot attempt go wide. Cosden had a pair of saves late in the quarter to keep the score at 1-0 at the half.
Vassar scored once at 31:20 and again at 33:02 to go ahead 3-0. The Brewers scored for the fourth time at 41:19.
In the fourth quarter, Castleton once again was in the offensive zone looking to get on the scoreboard. Back-to-back penalty corners saw Gwyn Vincent (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls Central) take a shot that was denied by Vassar keeper Kendra Pitts in the 56th minute. Vassar scored the final time at 57:07 to complete the scoring.
