CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton field hockey team earned their second victory of the season Wednesday evening, grinding out a 2-1 win over Westfield St. at Spartan Stadium.

The win moves the Spartans to 2-4 overall, while Westfield St. now sits at 3-3. Haley Spittle and Emily Lowell each found the back of the cage for Castleton in the second half to push the Spartans out to a 2-0 lead before the Owls' Meg Doherty scored to give the game its final score of 2-1.

Neither team could get much going in the first half, as the two squads battled back and forth to a 0-0 score at the break. The Spartans held a 10-6 shot advantage, putting three shots on goal to the Owls' two. The best look for Castleton came early in the half, when Spittle got out on a breakaway, but she was unable to put it on net, missing just wide.

In the second half, the Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 23:48 remaining when Spittle took a pass from Rachel Holland on a penalty corner and fired it past the goalie. Castleton added an insurance goal with just over eight minutes remaining in the game, when Lowell found a loose ball in the box and knocked it home for a 2-0 lead.

Westfield St. would mount a heavy offensive attack late, getting three penalty corners in the final 10 minutes. Doherty cut the Spartan lead in half when she fired a shot into a crowd that snuck through to the back of the cage to make it a 2-1 game. With just over one minute remaining, Westfield St. was given a penalty stroke with a chance to tie the game, but Rachel Bunce rang one off the post to keep the Spartan lead at one goal.

In the cage for the Spartans, Meeghan Doris recorded seven saves on eight shots. Megan Fountaine tallied three saves on five shots in the game for Westfield St.

Westfield St. held a 12-7 penalty corner advantage in the game, while also holding a 22-13 shot advantage.

The Spartans are back in action on Friday night when they host Thomas College in their first North Atlantic Conference game of the season. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
