Spartan Field Hockey Defeats Sage 5-1

CASTLETON, VT- The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team hosted Sage College at Dave Wolk Stadium on Saturday evening. The Spartans scored three times in the second half to pull away from the Gators and win their first game of the season 5-1

How It Happened
It was a scoreless opening period. Both teams registered a shot with the Gators getting one on frame

The Spartans upped the pressure in the second quarter. Castleton had three penalty corners and two shots on goal in the first minute and a half. After the third penalty corner, Peyton Richardson (Windsor, Vt./Windsor) was able to get one into the back of the cage to put the home team ahead 1-0. 29 seconds later, Ava LaRoss (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Fall Union) scored off a rebound to put Castleton ahead 2-0 just under the 20-minute mark. The Spartans tallied three more shots on goal in the quarter, but the score remained 2-0 at halftime.

Sage closed to within one as Abby Barbagallo poked one through to make it a 2-1 contest less than two minutes into the third quarter. Castleton came back to score two goals to increase their lead to 4-1.

The fourth quarter was dominated by the Spartans as the Gators did not register a shot. Gwyn Vincent (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) scored Castleton's final goal of the game.

By the Numbers
• Vincent scored two goals and added an assist. She had five shots on goal
• Castleton led in total shots 19-5 and in shots on goal 14-4
• Izabella Cosden finished with three saves
• The win was the first for Spartans head coach Bella Kondi



What's Next

The Spartans are back at Dave Wolk Stadium on Wednesday evening when they host Western New England University. Game time is at 6:30 p.m.
