Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Neither team was able to break away from each other in a fantastic match this evening at Sabine Field in Northfield, Vt., as the Castleton men's soccer team and Norwich Cadets played to a 1-1, double overtime draw.
Solo Felekeni opened the scoring in the 87th minute to hand the Spartans a one-goal lead, but Norwich's Moab Schiers scored an equalizer with just 38 seconds left in regulation to maintain the even affair. Schiers' strike at the 89:22 mark ended Castleton's longest run of scoreless play (468:44) since the 1984 Spartan squad played 540 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal.
Norwich dominated the opening half of the contest, outshooting the Spartans 11-5, as neither team was able to convert on any scoring opportunities before the break. The hosts maintained their attacking momentum in the second half by producing another eight shots, but it was the Spartans who struck first with less than three minutes remaining in play to take the first lead of the game.
In his first match back from injury, William Von Heland was dribbling down the far flank before delivering a pass just inside the box that Felekeni one-timed into the top corner of the net to put the away side in front by one.
The Cadets wouldn't give up, however, and with just 38 seconds left in regulation, Schiers grabbed the equalizer with his sixth goal of the season. With a free kick positioned just outside the box, Colin Lozito played a deft touch that allowed Schiers to play the ball and blast a strike just past the extended arms of Amir Pasic and into the top right corner of the net to tie the contest at 1-1 and force overtime.
The Cadets nearly clinched the victory late in the second extra period when Ethan Melia hit the woodwork on a free kick from 20 yards out, but the Spartans withstood the pressure and earned a 1-1 draw.
In net, Pasic delivered another fantastic outing for Castleton with eight saves and just one goal allowed in 110 minutes of play. His counterpart, Stefan Skoff, was just as good, turning in a two-save performance in the even affair.
Castleton now stands at 5-2-1 on the season and extends its unbeaten run to five games, while Norwich moves to 4-3-1 overall. The Spartans return to action this Saturday at 4:30 pm, as they host the Johnson St. Badgers in North Atlantic Conference play on Homecoming Weekend.
