Castleton Falls to West Conn in Conference Opener

DANBURY, Conn. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team opened conference play Friday afternoon, falling 3-0 to West Conn.

The Basics:

How it Happened:
Castleton found itself trailing early after West Conn found the back of the net in the fourth minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Spartans looked to answer in the eighth minute, but the Wolves were able to keep the chance contained.  

Xander Berthiaume came off his line in the 14th minute to boot away another West Conn opportunity.

Castleton continued to search for the equalizer, with Owen Hackett recording a shot in the 35th minute following a Wolves turnover, but the attempt was saved. With seven minutes remaining in the opening half, CJ Wallingford gave the Spartans their best chance of the half, but his shot was denied by a sliding save from the West Conn goalkeeper. Hackett created another opportunity before halftime, but his attempt was saved as Castleton entered the break trailing by one.

West Conn added two goals in the second half to extend its advantage to 3-0.

Castleton continued to battle but was unable to find the back of the net as West Conn secured the conference win.

  • Hackett recorded two of Castleton's first-half shots.
  • Berthiaume played all 90 minutes and finished with six saves.
