Castleton Blanks Bobcats in First Win of the Season

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Sunday, shutting out Paul Smith's College, 4-0. Jacques Alfani and Sam Barr each scored twice to lead the Spartans to the victory.

How it Happened:
The Spartans controlled possession early, putting heavy pressure on Paul Smith's defense. Castleton fired seven shots over a four-minute span, with several finding the target and others narrowly missing.

In the 15th minute, Holden Crouthamel sent a ball up the field from the back line to Alfani, who beat his defender and found the back of the net to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

Just three minutes later, Barr crossed the ball into the box to Alfani, who finished off the chance by sending the ball off the top of the crossbar and into the net for his second goal of the afternoon.

Alfani continued to make an impact when in the 20th minute, he took the ball up the sideline before dribbling into the box and finding Barr in front of the net. Barr put the ball past the keeper to extend Castleton's lead.

In the 63rd minute, Barr added another goal to put the game safely out of reach and earn the 4-0 victory.
