WATERVILLE, Maine – The Spartans didn't score in the first three innings of either game but the offense came alive late each contest as they swept Thomas 4-2 and then 8-0 in five innings on Friday afternoon.

Castleton belted 21 hits on the afternoon to extend the team's winning streak to five games and improve to 16-9 overall and 7-1 in the North Atlantic Conference. Thomas managed just eight hits all day as the team dropped to 8-19 and 4-4 in conference play.

Brittany Brayman led the offense in game one with two hits and a pair of RBI while Kayla Wood went 7.0 innings and five up two earned runs while walking four and striking out eight batters. Four different players recorded at least two hits in the second game while freshman Taylor Paquette tossed a complete-game shutout while giving up just three hits with one strikeout.

In the opener, Thomas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Briana Warren doubled and moved to third on a bunt. Warren scored on a fielder's choice, but Wood got out of the frame with a pair of groundouts.

Neither team was able to find any offense until Castleton broke through in the top of the sixth. Kayla Daigle led off with a single and Jessica Babcock followed with a single to put runners on the corners for Brayman. The junior ripped a double to centerfield, giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans added two more runs in the seventh for a 4-1 advantage. With runners on second and third, Daigle singled to right field, scoring Stephanie Sylvester. Two batters later Kristi Lawless scored from third on a wild pitch for the three-run lead.

The Terriers didn't go down quietly as Lindsy Hoopingarner hit a one-out double and crossed home on an RBI double with two outs to cut the deficit to 4-2. Wood then got a strikeout to end the threat and the contest.

Paquette and Thomas starter Emily McKenney kept the offenses scoreless until the fourth inning of the second contest.

In the top of the fourth, Ruby Bushey hit a one-out double and Sylvester followed with a single to advance Bushey. McKinlie Carpenter came through with a single to plate Bushey for the 1-0 lead and Sami Carlo added a single down the left field line to extend the lead to 2-0. Lawless made it 3-0 on an RBI single before back-to-back outs ended the frame.

The Spartan offense exploded for five runs an inning later to stretch their lead to 8-0. Sylvester started it with a two-out double and Carpenter followed with an RBI double of her own before Carlo singled to put runner on the corners. Lawless then reached on an error that allowed both Carlo and Carpenter to score for the 6-0 advantage. Daigle kept the offense going with an RBI single up the middle and Babcock extended it to 8-0 on an RBI single.

Paquette gave up a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth and then a one-out single put runners on the corners. However, she induced consecutive groundouts to end the inning as Castleton won via the eight-run rule.

McKenney took the loss in the second game as she allowed seven runs (four earned) in 4.2 innings with four strikeouts. Sonja Morse lost the first game as she went 7.0 innings and gave up three earned runs with six strikeouts.

The Spartans look to remain atop the NAC standings when they play Maine Farmington for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 pm.
