LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Castleton capped off its regular season this afternoon by capturing its fourth straight win with an 8-1 result against the Lyndon St. Hornets in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division action at the Dudley Tennis Center.
The Spartans turned in an impressive display with five straight sets singles victories in addition to sweeping the doubles games. Castleton now stands at 8-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference, whereas the Hornets fall to 1-10 (1-5 NAC) on the season in the losing effort.
The squad got off to a quick start in the match, as the tandem of Andrew Overton and Kyle Martin took the first-flight doubles match 8-4. Seth Marcil and Tyler Wilcox teamed in the No. 2 slot and recorded an 8-4 win, while Ryan Mulder and Trevor Hanna followed with a perfect 8-0 victory in the third doubles game.
Castleton continued its dominating play in the singles games, as Martin and Marcil recorded straight sets victories in the first and second-flight matches. Overton maintained the winning ways in the No. 3 slot by recording a 7-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory in tiebreakers before Wilcox took the fifth-flight match 6-3, 6-4. Hanna secured the 8-1 win with a 6-1, 7-5 result in the No. 6 contest.
With today's result, the Spartans qualified for the NAC East Tournament and will face the Thomas Terriers on Saturday at 10 am in the semifinals round. The tournament will be played at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H.
