CASTLETON, Vt. – A pair of complete-game shutouts by Castleton pitching kept Lyndon off the board all day as the Spartans won 1-0 and then 7-0 in North Atlantic Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Kayla Wood was dominant in the opener, giving up just three hits while striking out nine batters and walking one to improve to 6-0 on the year. Freshman Taylor Paquette was equally impressive in the second game of the day, allowing just one hit while striking out four without a walk. Katie Gagne led the offense with four hits on the day, while also scoring two and driving in a pair of runs on a two-run homer.

In the opener, both pitchers kept the offenses silent until the bottom of the third inning. Kristi Lawless led off the frame with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a groundout. With two down, Brittany Brayman sent a pitch back up the middle for the RBI single and Chelsea Grady followed with a single, unfortunately the duo were stranded to end the threat.

Castleton loaded the bases in the fourth with one-out singles by Stephanie Sylvester, Timi Carone and Lawless. Kayla Daigle followed with a dribbler to towards first base and Brooke Dolloff fielded the ball and fired home to get the force out. A flyout left the Spartans still clinging to the one-run lead.

However, Wood didn't allow a hit over her final three innings and just one runner reached base on the way to her victory. Brayman and Lawless each finished 2-for-3 in the contest.

Castleton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game two. Following a leadoff single by Daigle and a fielder's choice by Jessica Babcock, Gagne launched a ball over the left field fence for a two-run shot.

The Spartans added to their lead in the fourth with three more runs. Daigle led off with a single and Babcock ripped RBI triple to the right center wall to push the lead to 3-0. Brayman and Gagne followed with consecutive singles, allowing Babcock to score. Ruby Bushey then singled home Brayman, and a walk from McKinlie Carpenter loaded the bases. Sami Carlo came through with an RBI single to extend Castleton's lead to 6-0 but consecutive outs ended the scoring.

An inning later the Spartans pushed their advantage to 7-0 as Babcock led off with a single and came around to score on Gagne's third hit of the day.

Paquette did the rest, retiring Lyndon in order in the fifth and six innings, and allowing just one runner to reach on an error in the seventh before shutting the door with three straight outs. Gagne went 3-for-3 while Babcock and Daigle each recorded two hits.

Castleton improves to 10-6 with the win and a perfect 3-0 conference play while the Hornets drop to 5-9 and 2-2 in NAC action.

The Spartans return to the diamond when they host Middlebury on Wednesday at 3:30 pm for a doubleheader.
