Spartans Defeat Thomas 5-4

CASTLETON, Vt. – Tyler Wilcox captured the fifth-flight singles match in tiebreakers – 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) – to secure the winning point in Castleton's 5-4 victory over the Thomas Terriers this afternoon at Grand Slam Tennis in Rutland, Vt.

The contest was a tightly knit affair, as the Spartans captured two straight sets singles victories as well as two wins in the doubles games. With the win, Castleton improves to 5-5 on the season and 3-1 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division, whereas Thomas drops to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

In singles play, Wilcox continues to be one of Castleton's top performers this season, as the sophomore captured his third straight win and sixth of the season with today's result in the fifth-flight match. After falling in the Spartans' midweek match versus Green Mountain, Ryan Mulder redeemed himself with an impressive straight sets – 6-2, 6-4 – victory in the No. 4 slot. Trevor Hanna added a straight sets victory – 6-4, 6-3 – of his own in the sixth-flight match to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Mulder and Hanna partnered in the third-flight doubles match, and battled in tiebreakers to capture a 9-8 (7-5) victory. On the season, the duo holds a team-best 3-3 record. The tandem of Andrew Overton and Wilcox, meanwhile, collected its second win of the season with an 8-4 result in the No. 2 doubles match.

The Spartans return to action this Wednesday at 7 pm when they host the Green Mountain College Eagles in NAC East action.
