RUTLAND, Vt. – Castleton's men's tennis team opened North Atlantic Conference play this afternoon with a 6-3 victory over the MCLA Trailblazers at Grand Slam Tennis in Rutland, Vt.
The Spartans turned in a quality performance with three straight sets victories in singles play while also capturing the top-flight doubles match. With the win, Castleton now stands at 3-3 on the year, whereas the Trailblazers fall to 0-2 overall.
Seth Marcil continued his notable start to the season by improving his wins total to a team-leading seven on the year. The junior teamed with Kyle Martin to capture the No. 1 doubles match 8-4 before seizing the second-flight singles match in straight sets.
Andrew Overton and Tyler Wilcox were equally as impressive in singles play with straight sets victories in the No. 3 and 4 slots, while Tyler Konopka battled to a three set thriller, winning on a tiebreaker 4-6, 7-6, 10-8.
Along with the duo of Martin and Marcil, Wilcox and Overton teamed up in the second-flight doubles match and improved to 2-1 on the season with an 8-3 victory.
The Spartans are back in action next week when they host the Colby-Sawyer Chargers and Lyndon St. Hornets in conference action on Tuesday and Thursday.
