RUTLAND, Vt. – Castleton's men's tennis team finished up its season-opening homestand with a 7-2 victory over the Sage Gators this afternoon in non-conference action.
The Spartans turned in a solid performance with a pair of straight sets victories in singles action as well as sweeping the doubles games. With the win, Castleton climbs back to .500 overall with a 2-2 record, while the Gators suffer their first loss of the season.
Seth Marcil continued his torrid start to the season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the second-flight singles match to move to a team-best 3-1 on the season. Andrew Overton picked up his first win of the year in the No. 3 singles match, while Trevor Hanna improved to 2-2 overall with a 6-7, 6-3 (10-7) victory in the fifth-flight contest.
In doubles action, the Spartans were led by the duo of Christopher Belanger and Marcil. The two upperclassmen pulled off a near flawless game in the No. 1 slot with an 8-0 victory. The tandem of Kyle Martin and Overton, meanwhile, recorded an 8-2 victory in the second-flight match followed by Ryan Mulder and Hanna, who teamed up to capture their second win of the year with an 8-2 result in the No. 3 slot.
Castleton is back in action next Wednesday at 3 pm when they travel to Northfield, Vt. to face in-state rival Norwich in non-conference play.
