Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton field hockey team dropped a North Atlantic Conference matchup to Colby-Sawyer on Friday evening by a final score of 3-2 at Spartan Stadium.
The loss moves the Spartans to 4-7 on the season, with a 1-2 record in NAC play. Colby-Sawyer moves to 7-6 overall, picking up their first conference win of the year to move to 1-2 in NAC games.
Sarah Wells tallied both Spartan goals on the evening, while Haley Spittle recorded one assist.
The Chargers got on the board first when Jordan Teixeira found the back of the cage on a pass from Allyse Mullen right in front of the goal to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. The Spartans would answer right back with a goal of their own when Wells one-timed a pass from Spittle past the Colby-Sawyer goalie to draw the game even at 1-1.
Coming out of halftime tied at one goal apiece, Colby-Sawyer came out firing and took a 2-1 lead just 27 seconds into the half. Brittany Grandbois collected a rebound right in front of the cage and drove it home for the lead. The Chargers would extend the lead to two goals less than two minutes later, when Teixeira notched her second score of the game, ripping a shot past the Spartan goalie into the bottom-left corner of the goal.
Caslteton would not go away, as Wells got out on a fast break and slid a shot just inside the right post to bring the game back to 3-2 with just under 14 minutes remaining.
With time winding down, the Spartans put the pressure on in the shooting circle, but Colby-Sawyer cleared the ball from harms way each time to bring the game to a close.
In goal for Castleton, Meeghan Doris made 11 saves on 14 shots. For Colby-Sawyer, Jodi Dumayne stopped 10 of the 12 shots she faced on the evening.
Shots were nearly even for the two teams in the contest, with Colby-Sawyer narrowly edging out Castleton, 21-20. The Spartans took nine penalty corners to the Chargers' six in the contest.
The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Keene St. for a non-conference matchup. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
