Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton's offense received the spark it had been missing this season, scoring three second half goals en route a 3-1 victory over Plymouth St. The win marks the Castleton's first victory of 2014 and improves the record to 1-4 on the season. Vinny Addonisio, Justin Hepburn and Spencer Dandurand provided the goals for the Spartans in the win.
Plymouth St. started the match off strong, holding possession and putting the Castleton defense on their back heels. The Panthers had their first chance of the game in the fifth minute when Nick Rutherford's shot forced Castleton's keeper Dan Palker to make his first save of the match.
In the 11th minute of the match, Plymouth St. grabbed its first lead of the game, 1-0. Senior Christian Bua found Rutherford open in the box, and the freshman forward knocked the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Panthers a one-goal advantage.
The Spartans had opportunity after opportunity, taking nine shots in the first half, and forcing the opponents keeper, Felix Lindeberg, into making 4 saves, but they couldn't find the equalizer.
Out of the break, the Panthers started the half by pushing the ball forward in attack, looking to increase their one-goal lead. In the 47th, they nearly did when a defensive lapse by the Spartans led to Ted Karlstrand receiving the ball right in front of an open net, but his shot went just wide of the post.
In the 53rd minute Castleton was able to respond to Plymouth's first half goal. Bryce Kaler passed the ball over the top to Addonisio, who dribbled by a defender and finished the ball into the back of the net to tie the match up at 1-1.
The Spartans had an opportunity to grab their first lead of the game in the 63rd minute when Justin Hepburn placed a perfect through ball to Jake Tietgens who dribbled around the keeper to get an open net. However, the junior's shot went just wide.
Just five minutes after that miss, Castleton took its first lead of the game, 2-1, whenHepburn's shot from outside of the box deflected off a defender and into the net.
In the 78th minute, the Spartans doubled their lead when Dandurand notched his second goal of the 2014 campaign. Tietgens provided a through ball up the middle, finding a sprinting Dandurand who chipped the ball over the keeper to extend Castleton's lead to 3-1.
Overall, the Castleton outshot their opponents by eleven, forcing Lindeberg to make seven saves on the game. Palker picked up his first career victory in the game, making three saves in the effort.
The Spartans return to action next Saturday during homecoming weekend when they host Lyndon St. at 7 pm for the opening conference match of the season.
