Box Score 1 Orono, Maine – Castleton appeared poised to capture the program's first-ever North Atlantic Conference Championship, taking a lead into the sixth inning of both contests, but were unable to close it out as Husson won its sixth consecutive conference title with a 3-1 win in game one and then a 7-5 victory to complete the comeback.
The Spartans came into the day without a loss against the Eagles and needing a single victory to earn the NAC Title as both teams were forced to play in the Maheny Dome due to rainy conditions in Bangor at top seed Husson. The back-to-back losses dropped the Spartans to 16-15 on the season while Husson improved to 30-10 and will represent the conference in the NCAA Tournament.
In the first game Tori Fearon belted a one-out home run to give Castleton a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Starter Kayla Wood then went to work, as did her counterpart Kayla Merrill. Neither allowed run through the first five innings, though Husson did leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth.
The Eagles finally tied it up in the sixth on an error, but a double play ended the inning with no more damage done.
In the seventh Husson pulled off the comeback as Casey Lopes walked and advanced to second on a bunt. Nicole Andrade followed with a home run to earn the 3-1 victory.
Wood was the hard-luck loser tossing 6.1 innings, allowing just three hits and three runs while walking three batters and striking three out.
The Eagles broke through first in the second game, scoring in the top of the second. Castleton responded in the bottom of the frame as Katie Gagne drove in a run on a fielder's choice and one out later Ruby Bushey singled home Stephanie Sylvester.
Husson tied it up in the third on a single and it remained 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth. With two down, Fearon earned a single to the shortstop. Jessica Babcock followed with a two-run shot to put the Spartans in front 4-2.
In the top of the seventh the Eagles made their run, scoring five times with two outs to turn a two-run deficit into a 7-4 advantage.
Trailing by three, Brooke Naylor led off the last of the seventh with a solo home run. Kristi Lawless doubled with one out, but Castleton was unable to put in the tying run on base as the team fell 7-5.
Gagne took the loss in the second game and allowed just six hits and two earned runs through the opening 6.0 innings. She finished with 7.0 innings pitched, seven runs, four walks and six strikeouts.
Jessica Babcock was 2-for-4 in the second game with that home run while Brittany Brayman recorded a pair of hits in the opening contest.
