BANGOR, Maine – Castleton held a lead in both games but reigning North Atlantic Conference champion Husson proved too much at the plate as the Eagles took down the visitors 9-3 and then 11-3 on Sunday afternoon at Boucher Field.

The Spartans were unable to lock down on defense, committing three errors in each game, but did receive some impressive hitting performances as they dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Husson, meanwhile, improved to 10-4 with the sweep and 2-0 in the NAC.

Brittany Brayman went 5-for-5 on the day and walked once to pace the Castleton offense. The sophomore also added one run scored and drove in three of the team's six runs. Senior Tori Fearon went 3-for-4 with two runs in the opening and then scored twice and recorded a pair of RBI on a home run in the nightcap.

In the opener Fearon lined a one-double in the top of the first and came around to score on a single by Brayman for the early 1-0 lead. Husson got on the board with two in the bottom of the second, but the Spartans countered in the top of the third.

Fearon again doubled with one out and Brayman drove her home with a single down the right field line. Stephanie Sylvester then reached on a fielder's choice and Brayman made it to second on a fielding error. Chelsea Grady took advantage with a run-scoring single to put the Spartans in front 3-2.

Starter Kayla Wood kept the Eagles scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. Husson loaded the base with no out and scored three times before Wood was lifted for Katie Gagne. Gagne allowed two more runs to score for a 7-3 deficit.

Castleton managed just three singles over the final two innings while the Eagles tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the sixth for the 9-3 win.

In the nightcap the Spartans started strong as Brayman singled home Fearon in the top of the first for a 1-0 advantage. The lead was short-lived as Husson scored six times in the bottom of the first to take back the lead.

Two innings later the Eagles added a two-run home run for the seven-run lead and three more runs in the fifth pushed it to a ten-run contest.

Castleton showed signs of life in the top of the fifth as Kristi Lawless belted a two-out single. Fearon followed with a home run to right center to make it 11-3 before a groundout ended the contest.

Wood took the loss in the opener, going 4.1 innings and allowing six earned runs while walking four and striking out five. Cassidy Tedeschi earned the loss in the second game, going all 5.0 innings and allowing nine earned runs while striking out five and walking two.

The Spartans return to action on Monday when they play Maine Maritime in a doubleheader beginning at 4 pm.
