Northfield, Vt. - The Spartans took an early advantage but suffered in singles play, dropping four of the last six points in the match to take a 5-4 loss to Norwich on Wednesday in Northfield.
Freshman Kyle Martin was Castleton's only double-winner as the Spartans fell to 0-1 on the season. Martin teamed with Kevin Rosset at second doubles to pull out a 9-8 win at the flight. Mike Glaser and Adam McCaffery paired at first doubles to earn an 8-6 win at the top flight giving the Spartans a 2-1 advantage after doubles play.
In the singles matches, Martin took a straight-set fourth singles victory, winning 6-2, 6-1. At sixth singles, Joshua Dower earned the Spartans fourth point in his first match of the year. The senior earned a three-set win in a super tiebreaker, winning 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
The Spartans fall to 0-1 to begin their season and will return to action on Saturday, March 8, when they host Green Mountain College in the first of two meetings between the teams. Saturday's match will not count towards the conference standings.
