Box Score KEENE, N.H. – It may have taken over a month and a half, but the Spartans finally finished its contest against Keene St., originally started on Sept. 2 in Castleton, as they fell 5-2 to the Owls on Friday afternoon.
The two teams played all but the final 3:06 of the game on Sept. 2, before weather caused the postponed of the final minutes. On that day Keene St. led 4-2, and today added one more goal to earn the victory and improve to 11-4 overall. The Spartans drop to 1-11 with the loss.
Castleton actually scored first in the contest, connecting on a penalty corner in the final six minutes of the first half. Sophomore Haley Spittle sent the corner to the top of the shooting circle for Kristy Pinkham. She made a quick move around a defender and ripped a back-handed shot through the defense and into the cage for the 1-0 lead
The Owls had a chance to tie it up with no time left in the half but the defense held strong on a penalty corner.
Five minutes into the second half Keene St. connected on a penalty corner to knot the score 1-1. Brittney Carpenter lined up on the far side and passed it to Marita Brothers who blasted it past the defense for the equalizer.
In the 45th minute, Sami Smith put forth an impressive individual effort, carrying the ball 40 yards down the far side of the field. As she neared the net she beat her defender and shot it to the near post, past the diving Jess Galatioto to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.
The Spartans countered just over three minutes later on a penalty corner. Spittle fired the ball into Pinkham and she dished it back to Spittle who put it past goalie Meghan Dwyer to tie it 2-2.
In the 56th minute Brothers had her shot saved by Galatioto in front, but Sami Smith was there for the rebound to give her team a 3-2 lead. Keene St. then made in 4-3 in the 59th minute on a two-on-one breakaway as Smith drew Galatioto before dishing to Marisa Lemoine for the score.
Following today's restart Haley Dolan finished off a pass from Smith with 1:35 remaining to earn the win.
The Owls finished with a 23-13 advantage in shots and 13-8 edge in corners. Meaghan Dwyer made four saves in the win, while Galatioto turned away 12 shots in a losing effort.
Castleton returns to action tomorrow when they face Thomas at 11 am.
