Box Score 2 Castleton, Vt. - The Spartans dropped two conference battles at the hands of the Husson Eagles on Saturday, falling 9-0 in five innings in the first game, and fell 6-3 in the second game.
Chelsea Crehan went 3-for-5 on the day for the Spartans, notching a double and a run scored. Brittany Brayman finished with a team-high two RBI, knocking her second home run of the season in the second game.
Sami Schultz went 3-for-4 in game one, with a home run and five RBI for the Eagles. In the second game, Aimee Mortensen went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and drove in four runs.
In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Spartans faced off against Becca McCarty. The Eagles' junior hurled four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out six Spartans on her way to earning the win. Castleton struggled offensively as their bats were silenced by McCarty. The Spartans did not advance a runner past second base throughout the entire game.
Husson got on the board in the third, manufacturing a run on a Deb Colpitts bunt that brought Lona Sargent home. The next batter was Schultz, who laced a single to center to bring home Courtney Hill to put the Eagles up 2-0.
In the top of the fourth, the Eagles strung together five hits to score five more runs, extending their lead to 7-0. Schultz lifted a two-run single into left field while Colpitts and Victoria Overlock each notched RBI singles. Husson added two more in the top of the fifth to seal the game.
In the second contest, Castleton got on the board first when Brayman lifted her second home run off of Husson southpaw Deb Colpitts. The freshman ripped an inside pitch over the left-field fence to put the Spartans up 1-0 in the bottom of the second.
Husson answered with two runs in the top of the third when Aimee Mortensen cracked a bases loaded single to right field, bringing home two Eagles to put the visitors up 2-1. Mortensen tacked on another Husson run with an RBI double in the top of the fifth.
With the Spartans trailing 3-1 and the bases loaded, Brayman stepped to the plate with a chance to put the Spartans ahead. The freshman crushed a long fly ball into the left-center gap, but Husson centerfielder Lona Sargent ran the ball down for the out. Chelsea Crehan scored on the sacrifice fly to cut the Husson lead to 3-2.
The Eagles used five hits in the top of the seventh to drive in three runs, increasing their lead to 6-2 as the Spartans went to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Stephanie Sylvester led off the inning with a walk, and after a strikeout Chelsea Crehan knocked a single. With runners on first and third, Kayla Daigle grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home a run. Castleton's rally would end there as Becca McCarty forced a groundout to end the game.
Deb Colpitts earned the win in the circle for Husson, while Taylor Lively took the loss for Castleton, allowing five earned runs in seven innings pitched.
The Spartans fell to 4-14 on the year, 2-2 in the North Atlantic Conference. They will take on Maine Maritime Academy for a doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 7 with the games beginning at 12 p.m.
