Box Score 2 Castleton, Vt. - Following a pair of wins Saturday, Castleton looks to continue its strong play, hosting Middlebury for a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
The Spartans swept Green Mountain 8-0 and 14-2 last Saturday afternoon. In game one of the doubleheader, last year's NAC Player of the Year Taylor Lively struck out 14 Green Mountain batters, including the first eight she faced, giving up only one hit and earning her second win of the year. In game two, Castleton continued to hit and tacked on six runs in the bottom of the first and didn't look back. Emily Sweeney went six innings allowing just four hits, two earned, and notching four strikeouts. The Spartans finished with 14 hits, Caylee Fleury and Melissa Halloran each went 3-for-3, while Chelsea Grady went 2-for-4 with two driven in.
The Spartans are currently 4-10 on the season. Jessica Babcock leads the team in batting this season with a .316 average, and 12 hits. Brayman is ahead of the pack in RBI (8), slugging percentage (.389) and tied for second on the team with Tori Fearon in hits (10). Chelsea Crehan leads the team with a .429 on-base percentage.
Lively leads the pitching staff, in 43.0 innings of work, striking out 42 with a 4.07 earned run average and 16 walks. Emily Sweeny in 36.0 innings has struck out 19 with an 8.56 earned run average and 23 walks. Both pitchers have a 2-5 record on the season.
Middlebury is coming off a two-game sweep of Amherst 10-4, and 11-3 improving its record to 7-6 on the year. In game one Middlebury exploded in the sixth inning rattling off six runs on four hits which opened up the game. Kimber Sable had three hits, and two RBI. Carlyn Vachow had three RBI on two hits. Alexa Lesenskyji got the start going 4.2 innings, giving up three hits, and three earned runs. In game two the Panthers scored five runs in the fourth to break open the game, ending the game on the eight-run rule in the sixth. Jessica Poracky went 4-for-4 with two RBI. Vachow and Sarah Boylan drove in three runs apiece. Neve Stearns earned her first career win allowing three runs and eight hits over five innings of work.
Jessa Hoffman leads the Panthers with an outstanding .545 average, as well as hits (24), slugging percentage (.795) and on-base percentage (.580). Vachow is second in average (.385) and hits (15). Elizabeth Morris leads the pitching staff going 4-1 with 27 strikeouts, 2.01 earned run average, and six walks on the season.
Last year Castleton dropped both games to Middlebury on the road. The Spartans fell 7-2 in the opener and then 13-3 in the second game.
