Spartans Take Care of Maine Maritime 13-3

Castine, Maine – Sophomore Zach Davidson set a new single-season assist record and spearheaded a team effort as the Spartans dispatched of Maine Maritime 13-3 on Sunday afternoon at Richie Field. 

Davidson matched a career high with six assists and added two goals for a team-high eight points on the day. The six helpers give him 42 assists for the season, breaking the previous single-season program record of 38 set by Rob Regna back during the 2005 campaign. 

Overall Castleton recorded assists on 11 of its 13 goals and seven different players scored at least one goal. Senior Sam Bailey put home four goals, matching a season high, and dished an assist as well. Alex Green and Will Stuhler both added two scores as the Spartans improved to 10-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Mariners dropped to 4-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the loss. 

Green led off the scoring, getting a pass from Bailey just 42 seconds into the game for the early 1-0 lead. Over the next four minutes, Davidson found Stuhler, Green and then Bailey for the 4-0 advantage. After another Stuhler goal at 8:43, Nick Betti put Maine Maritime on the board at 8:15. Davidson ended the scoring with 3:19 left in the quarter. 

The Spartans continued to press their advantage and scored four times in the second, three by Bailey and one from Davidson to own a 10-1 lead at the break. 

Taylor Swarter and Matt Nota extended the lead to 12-1 in the third before Betti and Hermes went back-to-back for Maine Maritime to make it 12-3. Alex Denny scored off a Swarter assist in the fourth for the 13-3 final. 

Freshman Peter Latulippe was stellar in net, giving up just three goals in 50:19 while making ten saves. Sam Polas played the final 9:41 and made one save without allowing a goal. 

The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they travel to face Norwich at 4 pm.
