Box Score Bangor, Maine – The Castleton offense scored on its first possession of the day, but wouldn't record another point as the Husson defense proved stout in a 34-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Complex.
The Spartans struggled to get in a rhythm as they totaled just 191 yards on the day, with 181 coming through the air. Tyler Higley went 13-for-28 for 156 yards with one interception while Elias LaCount the team with 25 rushing yards on eight carries. Kevin Alberque led the receiving corps with six catches for 66 yards while Soren Pelz-Walsh had five catches for 66 yards.
Defensively, Castleton allowed the Eagles to total 356 yards rushing on 59 attempts and 517 yards of total offense. Bryon Jackson led the ground game with 125 yards on 15 attempts while Kyle McKinnon added 97. Joe Seccareccia completed 12 of 17 passes for 161 yards and two scores.
After forcing a three-and-out on Husson's opening drive, the Spartans took possession at the Husson 43-yard line. On third down, Higley found Pelz-Walsh for a 26-yard completion to the Husson 15. The offense stalled inside the 20, but Robert Lineberger hit a 27-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead.
The Eagles came back on the following drive, going 65 yards in 11 plays and culminating with a Ryan Dorso five-yard run into the endzone. They made the extra point for the 7-3 advantage.
Castleton stalled on its next two drives, but Nick Romeo recovered a fumble at the Husson 49-yard line following a Seccareccia miscue. On second down, Higley hit Alberque for a 23-yard gain to the 26-yard line. After a rush by Toczko the two connected once again, with Alberque going down at the 16. Three plays later Higley found Pelz-Walsh at the Husson five. The Spartans failed to inch any closer and Lineberger's 22-yard field goal attempt missed with 8:05 left in the quarter.
Husson took over at the 20 and marched down the field 80 yards for the score to push its lead to 13-3 with just 1:49 left. Senior Mick Wong blocked the extra point. Neither team was able to score before the end of the half.
Castleton stalled on its first two drives of the third quarter while the Eagles scored on each of their first two possessions to grab a 27-7 lead with 2:37 remaining in the quarter. Husson added a score with just five seconds left in the third to push its advantage to 34-3.
Neither team scored in the final 15 minutes, and Kyle Kianpour's 25-yard pass to Makai Hawkins on the final play of the game, proved to the be the Spartans' longest play of the half.
Leo Audy led the defense with a career-high 14 tackles while sophomore Tucker Stone and Todd Carr each added 11 stops.
Castleton returns to action next week when the team hosts Mount Ida at 1 pm.
