Box Score Potsdam, N.Y. - In the 107th minute, senior Trevor Kotrady (No. Clarendon, Vt.) buried a goal that sealed the Potsdam College Cup title for the Spartans. After a scramble in front, Kotrady slipped the ball past Potsdam keeper Jake Gyder, beating the hosts 2-1 in the second overtime period of Sunday 's championship match.
In the first half, Castleton applied some serious pressure to the Bears' defense taking ten shots to the Bears' five. Despite the unrelenting attack, the first half ended in a 0-0 tie.
The second half was more of an even tilt, with the Spartans putting up nine shots while the Bears took eight of their own. Junior midfielder Spencer Dandurand (Colchester, Vt.) opened the scoring in the 65th minute, polishing off a rebound into the back of the net to put the Spartans up 1-0. Potsdam answered with a late goal in the 88th minute by Chris Chiarella that tied the score at 1-1 and sent the match into overtime.
Neither team was able to score in the first overtime period, with each team only mustering one shot apiece. It wasn't until the second period of extra time that the Spartans created a real opportunity. A loose ball in front of the net was collected out of the scramble by junior Dominic Heller (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) who found Kotrady for the score, ending the game in dramatic fashion.
Dandurand, Heller, and Kotrady were named to the all-tournament team. Junior goalkeeper Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) was named tournament MVP for his outstanding efforts over the weekend. Koenemann put up a shutout performance against Hilbert in the first round on Saturday and held Potsdam scoreless for 87 minutes before finally relinquishing a goal late in the game. In the two games combined Koenemann totaled nine saves, allowing one goal over the course of 196 minutes.
With the victory, Castleton begins the season 2-0 for the first time since 2001. The Spartans will play their home opener at Spartan Stadium Wed. Sept. 5 against Southern Vermont at 7pm.
