Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. – The Spartans' dropped to 0-4 as their last inning comeback fell just short as they fell 5-2 to Hunter College on Saturday afternoon at the Roanoke Valley Softball Bash.
Castleton couldn't generate any offense in the first six innings, but made it interesting in the final frame, trailing 5-0. Chelsea Crehan (Essex, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a grounder. After a strikeout and down to the team's last out, Tori Fearon (Colchester, Conn.) ripped a triple to score Crehan and cut the deficit to four.
Mercedes Maltbie (Warrensburg, N.Y.) followed, and reach on an error by the leftfielder, scoring Fearon. Shannon Jipner (Bristol, Vt.) followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with the tying run at the plate, however a strikeout ended the scoring threat and the contest.
Junior Taylor Lively (Greenfield, Mass.) had her best game of the season thus far, allowing just three earned runs and walking one batter while striking out nine. At the plate, Fearon went 2-for-4 with one RBI as the team totaled four all-together.
Hunter scored in the first inning and held that advantage until the sixth inning when the team scored a pair for the 3-0 lead. The Hawks added two more in the top of the seventh to grab the 5-0 lead going into the final frame.
