Spartans Fall to No. 10 Tufts 8-0

Medford, Mass. – The Castleton field hockey team saw its record-breaking season come to an end against tenth-ranked Tufts in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to the Jumbos 8-0 on a wet, snowy andblustery Wednesday afternoon.

Facing a biting wind and snow flurries, the Spartans were held scoreless for just the second time all season as they dropped to 17-5 on the season. Tufts improved to 15-2 on the season and now travels to face William Smith in the second round of the tournament on Saturday.

The Jumbos got on the board early, scoring two times in the first five minutes. Tufts continued to press and finished the half with a 20-3 shot advantage and a 5-0 lead.

Castleton was able to put some pressure on the Jumbos in the second half, and also collected multiple corners in the final five minutes of action; however, the Tufts defense held strong.

The Jumbos scored three times in the final 35 minutes and owned the shot differential, 16-9 in the second on their way to the win. Castleton did earn nine second-half penalty corners.

Sophomore Jessica Galatioto was solid in net, making 18 saves while playing the entire 70 minutes.

Castleton finished the season with 98 goals, shattering the previous team record of 72 set in 2010. Senior Kealy Chipman set single-season records for points (68), goals (27) and assists (14), and also finished her career a program-record 166 career points and 70 career goals.
