CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans scored all three of their goals in the first 20 minutes and dominated play throughout on their way to a 3-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

Castleton finished with a 31-10 shot advantage in the contest, including a 19-6 margin in the second half alone. Beavers' goalie Paul Dupre (Rehoboth, Mass.) played a large part in shutting out the Spartans in the final 45 minutes, making nine big saves in the second half.

Five different players recorded points for Castleton, with goals from Nick Johnas (Niskayuna, N.Y.), Spencer Dandurand (Colchester, Vt.) and Bryce Kaler (Burnt Hills, N.Y.). The team improves to 9-3 and 3-1 in the North Atlantic Conference while UMF falls to 1-10 and 0-5 in the NAC.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the 12th minute. They capitalized on a foul after forward Trevor Kotrady (No. Clarendon, Vt.) was taken down inside the 18. Johnas took the ensuring penalty kick and buried in into the near corner for the 1-0 lead.

Four minutes later Castleton pushed it to 2-0 on a corner kick by Tanner LeCuyer (Plattsburgh, N.Y.). The senior sent the ball high into the box and Dandurand headed it into the upper far corner.

Kaler scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season at the 18:38 mark to extend the Spartan advantage to three. Jacob Roswell (Hartford, Vt.) lofted a cross from the far side of the 18 into the box for a waiting Kaler, who directed the header into the near corner of the net.

Castleton had three good opportunities in the first ten minutes of the second half; however, Dupre made three great saves to deny the Spartans.

It was much of the same for the remainder of the half, with neither team able convert. Dupre finished with 12 saves on the afternoon.

Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) got the start and played the first 45 minutes before giving way the freshman Emmitt Ackerman (West Rutland, Vt.), who made four saves in the second half.

Castleton returns to action on Sunday at 12 p.m. when the Spartans host Thomas. UMF plays at Green Mountain on Sunday.
